Lunch at the Mirabelle: restaurant review

On Tuesday 12th December 2023, I and my wife and two friends ate at the Mirabelle Restaurant at the Grand Hotel in Eastbourne, from their festive menu. It was wonderful. The portions were sufficient and not overwhelming and the flavours were exquisite.

My starter was the 64 Degree Slow Cooked Duck Egg Yolk, presented in that wonderful state half-way between runny and set, surrounded by fragrantly delicious parsnip puree and crisps, pickled shitake, crispy shallot, and three sticks of toasted briocheI. It was heavenly.

My main course was Roast Guinea Fowl breast cooked with its skin. Fantastic and complemented perfectly with charred chicory, salsa verde, celeriac, onion puree, and bacon crumb. It was one of those dishes where you nibble at each ingredient and allow it to linger on your palate so that you can relish every piquant moment. It was the taste equivalent of a chamber orchestra playing Mozart: each delicate flavour harmonised with the others to create an elegantly beautiful perfection.

The Choux Bun  filled with a pear poached in Lapsang tea, hazelnut praline crème patisserie, roasted hazelnuts, and caramelised milk ice cream was also yummy.

Service was both friendly and impeccable (I want to practise the wine waiter’s trick of using a thumb to hold the glass on a tray at an angle while pouring the beer). We were treated like personal guests.

With drinks (two beers and one of the cheapest wines) and service the bill came to £45 per person which is pricey but by no means extortionate and worth every penny for such an incredible gastronomic experience.
