The Fall Guy": film review

Following an accident, stunt man Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) quits films until he is recruited by producer Gail (Hannah Waddingham) to do a stunt for newbie director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt) with whom Colt had previously had an affair and for whom he still has romantic feelings. But all is not what it seems. The star of the movie Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) has disappeared so Gail asks Colt to find him. Cue multiple fights with baddies, a dead body in a bathtub and many chases.

This movie had it all: a thriller plot with a romantic subplot, comedic dialogue, some extravagant characterisations and, of course, great action sequences. It even had a dog who attacks the baddies (but only responds to commands in French). It doesn’t break the boundaries of cinematography (except for winning the world record for the most rolls by a car) but it was great fun.

Lee Majors, the star of the 1970s TV show ‘The Fall Guy’, whose character was called Colt Seavers, had a cameo appearance as a policeman, as did Heather Thomas who played Jody Banks opposite Majors in the TV series.

But for me, my favourite moment (apart from the dog wearing sunglasses at the movie premiere) was Emily Blunt singing Against All Odds in a karaoke ... and being amazingly good. Was that really her own voice?
